Blue Sun Room FICTION - ADVENTURE

Head Trauma

Monday, June 11, 2007

River's been kidnapped and is being held for ransom, and the crew of Serenity are not amused. First of an arc, but the story stands alone. Moderate violence.

All of them were frantic. Zoe was piloting the mule while Jayne watched their rear for pursuit and Mal held River to him, upright in his lap like a small child, her blood running out onto the beige cloth of his shirt. His own face was spattered with it, from the spray of impact. Jayne was bloody to the wrists from bludgeoning her captors with the butt of Vera, and then with his fists. Zoe and Mal’s commands hadn’t pulled him from the last twitching figure – only River’s keening had accomplished that. With icy dispatch he had delivered one final blow, shattering the man’s entire orbital structure and plunging shards of bone into his brain. Then he had turned, scooped River from Mal’s arms, and dashed for the mule.

“Wash, baby, get ready for…” Zoe cut herself off, wincing. “Kaylee. Open ‘er up. Warn Simon we got an incoming gunshot wound. Head trauma. Get Serenity prepped for takeoff. Rendezvous in five.”

“Gotcha.” Kaylee’s voice on the comm was strained, and she sounded out of breath. Mal scowled. If she and that hundan doctor had been rutting while they were on the job, he’d… No. Not with River gone. Stupid gou cao de thugs seeing their ship, all shiny from the recent overhaul, and thinking they were flush. Kidnapping River, just when things were getting’ all normal-like. Holding her for ransom – one-hundred platinum, when the Alliance reward was still at least ten times that. No matter what that gorram Operative said, they hadn’t just wanted River for her secrets.

Simon and Kaylee had been the ones to find Jayne, unconscious, between two bodies halfway between town and the ship. One bore the marks of strangling – his work – and the other had been kicked in the temple so hard the bone had shattered – River

Chilling but absolutely brilliant! I had tears in my eyes when they found River, but boy the relief when Zoe told Mal they hadn't taken her eye as they had feared. I hope they got all those *tamade hundan* and if they didn't that they track the rest of that nest of vipers down and eliminate them. This was powerful stuff, I think I held my breath through most of it. Ali D :~)

Excellent story! Well written, fast paced, and a good resolution.

I particularly liked your portrayal of Simon. Not many fanfic writers remember just who is is and what he's capable of.

So well written. I was actually at the edge of my seat. I can't remember the last time I've read something that had me so entranced.

Woah! That was really creepy but brilliantly written and had me enthralled the whole way through. I felt sick at the thought of those hun-dan taking River's eye (echoes of Xander, anyone?) but boy, did I breathe a huge sigh of relief when Zoe revealed she hadn't actually lost it.

Amazing work. I felt the crew's anger, pain, fear, everything they were going through. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

This was really tense. Are Jayne and River together in your 'verse? Cause if so that just makes my shipper heart skip a beat!

But regardless, this was very intense and well written. Can't wait to see the next parts!

And if they're not together yet, TamSibling...something like this could provide sufficient reason for River and Jayne to bond as she recovers;)

Gotta say, i3ernadette....when I read the words indicating that Mal, Zoe and Jayne thought that River's eye had been taken, I was shocked to all hell. Wonder if the attempted damage to River's eye was because they knew or found out she was a Reader - eyes of Seers being an object of importance in Joss's mystical mythology - or it was just a sadistic torture method...

Utter brilliance, this work was and I can't wait to see what you got up your sleeve next:D
