The ship's air was a warm, summer breeze around them and they were floating as much as they were walking. Her fragrance filled the hall like a flower garden, her smile the glow of sunshine. Mal kissed her hand and bowed, guiding her to the ladder of his open bunk, but his heart sank as her head disappeared below deck. Although he knew Inara had crept into his bunk a dozen times before, he suddenly felt embarrassed by the cramped space. He always kept it clean, kept the bed made; but it was a small bed and he had no fresh linens to put on it. And it seemed a crime for those sheets touch her angel-soft skin.

Mal climbed down behind her and looked nervously at her, but she wasn’t surveying the room with a critical eye. She was surveying him. Sizing him up. Self-consciously, he clung to the ladder, trying to hide himself with those tiny rungs. He’d begged her not to leave, but now he was the one who wanted to run away. Cautiously, he came around her, wondering if any amount of turning down of the linens would make the bed more appealing.

Inara was talking to him, her voice winsome and light. She was laughing because Kaylee had seen them holding hands on the catwalk. Mal wondered if the two ladies would meet up tomorrow and gossip about him. What did Inara expect tonight? What was he ready to give? She was between him and the open hatch and he suddenly felt trapped.

Her hand brushed his arm; was it just to keep him from stepping on her as she crossed the confined space? Just a brief touch, and her smooth fingernails tickled his skin maddeningly. She sat lightly on the bed, back against the wall, legs folded, and pulled the pillow onto her lap. He’d seen her adopt that same casual position on the sofa in her shuttle a million times. She was inviting him to talk, telling him to relax… using her wiles. Ta ma de, anything but that! He sat down in the chair opposite the bed and raked

This series just gets better and better, VB.

Funny how as soon as they're in Mal's bunk, it's the Captain who starts getting the willies. How very Mal-like.

And when Inara tries to get Mal to talk... wow. Emotional anguish to the extreme. Gah, I say.

The way they just talk themselves to sleep was just wonderful, and then Inara lkaying down on top of him was both hilarious and touching at the same time. And then the cuddling... oh, the cuddling. So sweet, so beautiful.

And finally, Mal speaks those three little words... even though he knows Inara isn't ready to say them back yet. And Inara offers her own words of truth in return.

Simply marvelous, VB. I love the direction you're taking with this series, and I'm ever so thankful you've decided to share it with us.

Beautifully written with wonderful imagery in your fic. I can see Mal having these doubts, and Inara without her professional mask would have to relearn how to behave. I especially loved the line, 'What was he ready to give?' What did he have left to give? Two people relearning how to have a meaningful relationship together - wonderful!

I guess it says something about how I perceive Mal and Inara as a couple when it seems weird to have them not struggle through angst and pain to get to an emotional goal,

You have done an absolutely amazing job here, valeriebean, in conveying all the little moments between Mal and Inanra as they struggle with the doubts and old habits that have caused them so much pain in the past when it has come to their relationship. While I personally think this is a tad bit too fluffy for these two - too much teen angst and not enough scarred veteran, IMO - you are not afraid of showing Mal and Inara being vulnerable with one another. That takes guts and skill:)

An amazing amount of skill - I absolutely concur with BEB here. I loved this. It was sweet and lovely and I think very true for both of them. I'd be interested to see how this all plays out with the rest of the crew. And while I realize this is the last bit from Chile, you will be posting more when you return home ... won't you?

This was excellent and I love the baby steps Mal is wanting to take and his desire that be truthful with each other because this is not playing, no game, no casual rumble in the hay. This is serious so every little thing means more than words alone can convey. I love how Mal anticipates Inara and gently guides her away from falling back on her Companion wiles. It is a slow road for them both but one they both want to travel together. Love it! Ali D :~)
