Did they line up this way on purpose?? If you look at the how they're arranged, it's like they're deliberatly line up next to those they have the most emotional interaction with on the show... Interesting..

Adam->Jewel / Jayne & Kaylee's brother/sister relationship
Jewel->Sean / Kaylee & Simon (duh!)
Sean->Summer / Simon & River
Summer->Ron / River & Book's relationship
Ron->Morena / Book & Inara's 'ship & talks
Morena->Nathan / Inara & Mal
Nathan->Joss / Mal & his Creator (!)
(also, if we skip over Joss as not "cast" but "creator")
Nathan->Gina / Mal & Zoe's 'ship
Gina->Alan / Zoe & Wash

Let's not forget the antagonistic relationship between Jayne & Simon, the Kindred Spirits relationship that Simon & Book share, or the Intellectual Equals relationship between Book & Mal.

Interesting observation, Astriana. I noticed it once you mentioned it. I also noticed that *gasp* all the women are in the front, and the men in the back! (wow, nobody must have picked up on that one!)

And if you take the third letter of each of their names it forms a word in the order they are standing... ok maybe not ;)
