He wasn't sure how to broach the subject or even if he should but being crammed together as they were it was not as if she couldn't sense his unease.

"*Shenme shi*?"

Mal squinted at her. Not because he couldn't open his eyes this time but because of the harsh light in the compound. The swelling on his face had gone down but the lumps and bruises had now turned black and blue with a fair amount of yellow. The worse cuts she had already treated for him though some wounds kept reopening and bleeding. Soaking through whatever bits of cloth she could find to bind them. "Why you think somethin's *cuode*?"

She squinted back at him. No sun in her eyes, just sending his look back at him to underline the fact that she didn't believe him. "I'm pregnant not stupid, Mal. Spit it out, what's eatin' you inside out?"

"Besides the lack of food?"

When she didn't crack a smile at his poor attempt at humour he relented and sighed. Gorramit, he hated this kind of *goushi*. The only good thing was that because of the poor state of the prisoners no one was paying them any mind.

"It's just... what you did for me." He broke off, embarrassed and awkward.

Did I miss something? How did Mal know Casey's name?

Well now...so Chapter 3 was a wet dream, eh? Gotta say, my dear...that was quite a Whedonesque style of plot twist: truth makes everything we seen completely different...but one's initially perceptions are understandable and not completely off the mark.

Also gotta wonder about whether Casey is a plant or not. The conversations between Maltby and the other guard was definitely the right kind of vague, since the reader is left wondering about how to take their comments: perverts mocking Mal and Casey's attempt to find solace in their situation...or old hands watching as Casey does her thing on Mal to gain information after "earning" trust.

Ahh, this explains the previous chapter quite nicely. This is a comment on that one, posted here so as not to be a spoiler: I think you did a very good job capturing the creepy "not quite right-ness" that often accompanies dreams.

This was very interesting, and that guard ain't wrong; Mal's deep respect and love for women is one of his greatest strengths as a person, but also a liability to him where people are willing to use that to hurt him. I got a feeling Mal's headed for a pretty heart-shattering experience here :(
