Wrote this drabble for LJ's firefly100, because it just popped into my head when I saw the prompt: Mistake

Title: Smart

Author: nauticalgal

Prompt: mistake

Character: River

Rating: G

Word Count: 100

She was smart enough to choose the perfect word. Sixth letter “h”. Next word. Fifth letter “e”. Simon would get it. Simon would know that they had never traveled by private charter to Sihnon on vacation. He would know to look for her code.

She was so smart. Smart enough to learn six languages. Smart enough to master higher mathematics. Smart enough to write a coded letter that her brother would understand.

Smart enough to get into the most exclusive private education program in thirty worlds.

So why hadn’t she been smart enough to see it was a huge mistake?

Very cool insight into River's thought process. I too have wondered why River couldn't predict, or at least have an inkling of what would happen ... but she's not omniscient. Plus, I think the prevailing theory is that while she might have been psychic before the Academy, whatever they did made her much more attune.

:(

How true - victims so often blame themselves.

Oh...this is some brilliant exploration of River's mindset during her time at the Academy...though she seems a bit more lucid than I recall she should be. Guess it must be the need to focus on the letter;)

Oh very nice. I'm not at all a fan of short drabbles, but this one worked very well.

You crammed an awful lot into 100 little words and to great effect. This was shiny, Ali D :~)
