Ch. 2 In the Black of Night

............................................

Jayne quickly gathered what he needed for River. When he arrived at the communal bathing area he heard water running from the shower. “Girl, I got ya a blanket. You keep that washin’ curtain closed up real tight. I’m gonna come in there and hang this here thing on the big old hook beside the sink.” He opened the hatch just far enough for his arm to fit through, then thrust the old army blanket into the room. “When you got all that blood washed offa you, wrap up tight in that thing so I can see to your wounds afore you put your clothes on.”

“All…all…alright,” River shivered as she ducked under the icy water one last time to rinse stinging soap off her body and out of her hair.

The big man went weak in the knee when he heard her response. “You okay in there?” he called out, when he was unable to stand waiting any longer.

“Cold,” she managed to say through chattering teeth and thankfully turned off the water.

“Girl you look like a drowned rat.” Jayne shook his head when the door opened and River stepped through wearing Mal’s army blanket over her shoulders. She held it closed in front of her, with her gun clutched tightly in her other hand. Even in the dim light of the flashlight her lips appeared blue.

“Let’s get you dried off an’ warmed up.” Jayne pulled her close and used one of his shirts to dry her hair. “At least you don’t smell like Reavers no more.” He could feel the shivers that shook her body as she leaned against him.

River pressed her face against the large warm man and let him absorb her shudders as she absorbed his body heat.

“There, there, girl you gonna be alright.” The mercenary reache

I love Jayne being all protective and the line about the teddy bear always makes me giggle, because Jayne is the biggest teddy bear a girl could snuggle.

I also adore the moment when Mal wakes up to find Inara in his arms. Absolutely perfect characterization of his joy at finding her there and his fear that things could end up bad with just a few words.

Gotta wonder what the Operative wants to talk with River about. Something related to his speech to Mal just outside Serenity's cargo bay at the end of the BDM perhaps?

Anyway...loved this chapter to bits, Lattelady6! Especially Jayne's sucessful fight to corral his usual hormonal behaviour into something resembling noble and compassionate. That and his mix-n-match comments about River having a body that invokes sinful thoughts and her deserving to be safe somewhere, sleeping with stuffed animals. Definitely a Jayne kind of contradiction;)

Loved this, your River/Jayne interaction was wonderful and I just adored the scene where Mal wakes to find the girl of his dreams, Inara, in his arms. About time those two fessed up and gave in to their feelings about each other. As for what the Operative wants with River, I'm with Jayne! Ali D :~)

It's rather entertaining to see Jayne struggle with his usual 'urgings'. Being all proper ain't his style, so the poor guy must feel like he's being tortured. I love him for it. The way he's looking to River is so touching.

Your characterisation is, as usual, spot on. River is still so fragile, and Jayne sees that, but also recognising that she's also a woman. Damnit woman! How is it that you can make me like Rayne?

As for Mal and Inara...they should just hurry up and get it on as far as I'm concerned. Two much angst surrounds those two.

I vote that the Operative should see River. That would be a VERY interesting little scene.

As usual Lattelady6, you stuff rocks the socks.
