"Yer WHAT?"

"I said, I'm preg..."

"Yeah, heard that part. Just tryin' to figgur how it happened."

"Well, Mal, when a man and a woman fall in love..."

"I know about THAT, darlin'. Just thought, ya know, ya had some sorta fool-proof method."

"Nothing is 100% fool-proof."

"Ain't that the truth. Well, I guess this changes everything, don't it?"

"There are options, you know. Simon says..."

"Don't care what the doc says. You and me, we made another living human being, even if it was not what we intended. And, well, I gotta do right by you for that. Seeing as I am the responsible party and all."

"Mal, I was there too, you know. Besides, I don't think a shotgun wedding using Vera is what every girl has in mind for her special day."

"Baobei, this ain't on account of you being knocked up. Well, OK, it speeded up the timeline some, but I had been ponderin' the notion."

"How romantic."

"I can be plenty romantic when the situation calls for it! Seems to me that's how the lil' butterbean got made in the first place."

"Mal, I think our child would appreciate not being compared to a vegetable. And I don't want you to rushing into marrying me just because of this."

"It ain't that. I ever tell you about my Pa?"

"Just that he wasn't around very much."

"Actually, he wasn't around much at all. Took off right after I was born. Didn't even do right by my Ma. So yeah, I really and truly am a hwoo-dan."

"Mal, I..."

"I will not have pity from you Miss Serra. My Ma was one helluva tough woman and the ranch hands took me under their wings. Didn't have much use for him after all. Point is, I intend to be better'n that. Better to you and better to the lil' butterbean."

"Just do me one favor?"

"What's that?"

"Promise me you won't be calling our child a butterbean as a teen-ager."

"How about an eggplant? Eggplants are all big and shiny and...OWWW!"

LOL!!!!!

I love the "butterbean" and Mal getting pinched/slapped/whatever it was at the end (pinch seems most likely, but a hard one). Just like them.

Butterbean...probably what Mrs. Reynolds called Mal when he was little;)

This was brilliant stuff, WTG! Definitely loved how you did this with all show and no tell:D

Only Mal could be so 'romantic' about the forthcoming birth of his and Inara's child. Butterbean! Bwah, I think that one may stick. Love this, Ali D :~)

I don't know what Inara's on about, I think Butterbean is an adorable nickname.
