“Take it easy Jayne, your body is going to need time to heal. The drugs I used to treat you will have weakened your immune system, and caused some muscle deterioration.”
Jayne swung his legs over the side of the exam table, “I feel fine Doc.” He felt like shit but damned if he’d admit it to top three percent standin’ over lookin’ all ‘gee I’m so smart…I saved your sorry life again.’ He should feel grateful, but his head ached, throat was raw, damn muscles were tight and weak. Felt like he got caught in a fair fight, an’ ruttin’ lost.
Zoe leaned casually against the door to the infirmary, arms folded, “Is he giving you any trouble Simon?”
“Not likely, he’s as weak as a baby. I could take him with one arm behind my back.” Simon said as he busied himself packing away vials of medicine.
“Ya feelin’ lucky Doc?” Jayne said sourly as he stretched his shoulders, a challenge in his eyes. Sure Simon was a little blurry in that damn white coat against the white walls of the infirmary. So what, there was two of him. He’d hit ‘em both.
“Jayne, you do realize that Simon just saved your life, right?” Zoe’s condemning look, fuzzy, but unmistakable deflated some of his irritation.
“I think for the first time I may have second thoughts about saving a patient.” Simon stared at his hands a shadow of self-loathing twitching across his face.
“Well, I weren’t gonna hurt him or nothin’…well not too bad.”
Simon sneered safely across the room.
Zoe cocked her head at Jayne.
He groaned, “Awright, come ‘ere Doc, you did save my life…so ahhh, gimme me a hug.”
“Are you insane?”
Zoe looked at Simon out of the corner of her eye, “Did he hit his head?”
“No, but there was the no oxygen thing…” Simon said backing out of the infirmary when it looked like Jayne was going to try to hug him. He slipped past Zoe and bolted down the hall.
Zoe’s dimples softened her face, “Why do you pick on Simon? He’s saved your life and patched you up more times than I can count.”
“Hell, it’s just too easy.”

Zoe's gun? It's a Mare's Leg, which is rifle that's been modified via a shortened stock and barrel to be like an oversized pistol. In the case of Zoe's sidearm, it's a sawed-off Winchester lever-action, Model 1892 or later, that fires a .44-40 or a .45 Colt bullet. Your line of text about Jayne being amazed that hands that can fire such a weapon as Zoe's gun could shake while touching Jayne stays perfect in its imagery and importance...just not in its technical accuracy;)
Still...to make up for my OCD when it comes to weapons of painful death, I will say that few people can write intimate moments with any kind of real honesty. Fewer people can do it for characters where the match-up is seen as weird. But I have to admit you surpass them all, mercenarysong, with the level of emotion and pure descriptive power you had going here when Zoe and Jayne were making love. For that, I salute ya:D

I definitely want to stay true so your OCD --way cool to me. I really appeciate the help. As you can see I was floundering on the weapons side so your insight is totally appreciated -- I'll fix it rightaway. And thanks for the good words. They mean a lot to me.

(but, it should be "dyin'" rather than "diein'")
I really think you should consider posting this series over at the Zoe/Jayne community at livejournal (http://community.livejournal.com/mercandthemate/). It's a small comm, but I know they'd love it!
I wish I could say. I'm still working on it. I'm aiming for next Friday but work is crazy and (although I wish this was my job) I write whenever I get a free minute, usually that's after midnight. More information than you asked for I know...ok short answer...hopefully next weekend.
