It had been 21 days since Inara Serra had left Serenity and every morning Captain Malcolm Reynolds started the day by telling himself, . By the time he’d finished drinking his morning coffee, he could almost believe it.

The days melted into an unexpected sameness that left him strangely melancholy. He excused it by reminding himself that ‘just ‘cause he was a bad man, didn’t mean he always had ta be causin’ trouble. But then there were the night, the long nights he spent wonderin’ his ship, restless, unable to take his ease. It was becomin’ a source of cantankerousness that had him wound tighter than a tick.

“Gorramnit,” he muttered as pulled out his seat at the head of the big dining table, a bottle of Kaylee’s homebrew in one hand and a glass in the other.

“May I join you, Captain?” Shepherd Book poured himself a cup of coffee and nodded toward the seat next to Mal.

“This is a public room, so I ain’t goin’ stop ya.”

“Thank you,” Book sat and took a moment to ask God to help him find words that might lead the younger man from his current dilemma.

“Just get it over with and say your piece, then one of us can get some sleep tonight.” The Captain poured more whiskey into his cup and took a long drink. If he had to endure another of the holy man’s sermons he wasn’t gonna do it sober.

“Did you know that the definition of companion is ‘an intimate friend or associate.?”

Nice and believable conversation between Mal and the Shepherd. I like Book using logic and reason to get Mal to see past his own pigheadedness.

I can well imagine Book having this conversation with a reluctant Mal though the painting Inara whiter than white bit doesn't sit well with me. Inara is not an innocent and Mal did not betray her, especially as Inara has been lying to herself about her feelings and motives since her arrival on Serenity. No wonder the poor man is confused over what she really feels (or doesn't). And Nandi was a self confessed whore and not ashamed to openly admit it. It wasn't as if Nandi was a love match or as if Mal and Inara were in a relationship and he was cheating on her. Yet isn't it telling how afterwards they both felt guilty? Ali D :~)

Wow...brilliant work here, Lattelady! Book really knows how to reach those reticent fuzzy wuzzies;D

Gotta agree with Alison though...Inara ain't completely innocent, since Mal has one moment where he allows himself to let go and spend some needed quality time with a willing partner that ain't out to kill him...and Inara gets her psyche dropkicked. I would be in a mighty similiar mindset (though I would hope less of the constant slurs again Inara's job;D) if I felt for someone like Inara, who gives off zero signals about her having anything resembling feeling for me and who runs when the big emotional guns are rolled out: confused as all Hell and pissed at still being under her spell when she's seemingly long gone. But I guess that's the real attractiveness of the whole scenario: complex and dizzying emotions with a unobvious solution:D

Very good, I easily lost myself in the conversation, just what a good story does. Please write more stories, like everyone else I miss the charactors and the relationships in the crew of Serenity.
