“And that’s how I put it all together,” Kaylee finished, smiling wide enough to take in the whole room, especially Simon and River on the couch, and the small screen in front of them.

It had been a stroke of genius, Kaylee thought. After the hospital heist on Ariel, they had no further need of the fake ambulance. Before leaving it in a junkyard, Kaylee removed a few vital components – a circuit board or two, and most importantly, the largest viewscreen it contained.

“We can watch movies on that?” Simon asked.

“Sure can!” Kaylee chirped. “Just gotta plug it into the Cortex here – there’s a list of stuff we can pull down and watch on this thing.” She sat next to Simon, not as near to him as she’d like, but she figured on scooting if things got too scary. She’d pick something with violence.

“Isn’t that illegal?” Simon asked. “Those movies on the Cortex usually aren’t...”

“Movies?” a rough voice came from the doorway to the cargo hold. Jayne threw himself down on the couch between Simon and Kaylee, stretched both arms along the back of it, and stacked his feet on the coffee table with a thud that made Kaylee’s carefully-rigged equipment rattle.

Simon winced. Kaylee sighed. Jayne, oblivious, looked from one to the other, his face lit up like Christmas morning. “We gonna watch something with explosions?”
