I set the firefly-CD on "repeat", froze Mals dear face in the TV set and started to write - so this is, what I ended up with. Teachtaire was so kind to lector it - thanks! So here comes my first fanfic ever (though I have written shortstories). Comments are welcome. Hope, you all enjoy!

Pain

By Esther Schmidt

Setting: sometime between “War Stories” and “Heart of Gold”

"Cap? Do you have a few minutes?"

Kaylee entered the kitchen, where Malcolm was meditating over some papers, obviously comparing income and spending of the last weeks. Judging by the way he was bent over the table, the result of his calculations caused him some reasonable amount of pain.

"What's the problem?" he asked absent-minded without raising his head.

"It's the compression coil, sir."

“Gah!” He let out a muffled scream as if someone had stuck a living fish under his shirt. Instantly upright sitting, he stared at his board mechanic.

"Never", he growled, "never ever do I wanna hear this gorram word again!" This thing had cost him some of the most horrifying hours on board of Serenity ever, being almost suffocated, shot, bled to death and - worst of all - being all alone. He didn't like to be reminded of that particular episode of his life.

"But how should I call it then, Captain?"

"Call it piece of gou shi or call it Betty-Lou, I don't care. Just don’t call it … what you call it."

"But that doesn't change the fact, that we need a new one."

"Again?" Malcolm stretched the word until it appropriately matched his lack of understanding. "It was exchanged, wasn't it? I mean, I took quite a hit, to get a replacement."

"No Captain. It wasn't the co …."

"Kaylee!"

"… smos", she ended the word, springing to the first thing, that came to her mind, "it was the catalyser, that was exchanged. Remember?"

Malcolm muttered some of the more unpleasant but colourful expressions that the Chinese language offered so abundantly.

"So now, you have to exchange this other thing."

"Well", Kaylee shrug her shoulders. "Th

I enjoyed reading this story. Great job on your first fanfic.

I really enjoyed the interplay between Mal and Kaylee in the first scene. Very nice!

Good job on your first longer work. I would recommend getting yourself a beta - someone to proof your work before posting it. I would have rated this higher except for the spelling and grammatical errors. Right after Wash says "Hell, he's not Niska" you spelled Inara as "Ingra."

Keep on writing! I'd love to see more.

Loved this, though a couple of times I wanted to shake Inara for her lack of gratitude. I really feared, like Mal, that at the end those items would be used on Inara so a big sigh of relief to find it would be the other way around! And I loved Inara softening towards him at the end. Also thought Simon was very smart to think of using the mineral to track the Captain while having something easier for Atherton to find as a tracking device and allay suspicion. Very very shiny, just a tidy up of the spelling and this would have been perfect. I can't believe this is your first piece of fanfiction, well done! Ali D :~)

This is your first fanfic? Well now...someone's been hiding a shiny piece of talent;)

Definitely enjoyed this tale, though I am still surprised that Mal didn't off Atherton. Leaving him alive just will fuel his desire for vengeance against Mal and Inara....

And Inara really needs to at least give Mal a simple thank you for the times he has stepped in to defend her. Yeah, the Guild would have dropkicked Atherton for any harm done to Inara if Mal hadn't stepped in...but she would have been either harmed or killed if she decided Wing had gone to far:(

This was really a satisfying read - you captured the characters very well. This is your first fan-fic? I'll be watching for more as soon as you are inspired again!

Thanks for all your encouraging comments. This really gives me a boost, so I might be able to finish the crossover, I'm working on :o). Shiney people, all of you.

I have to go to battle for Inara a bit, though. In a way, she did not want Mal to save her, because she was more scared for him, then she was for herself (just like him). And she CANNOT go soft on him (especially in moments, when it would really be fitting), because then all kind of horrible things could happen to her - like loosing her heart for good!

I really enjoyed this - especially the insights into Mal dealing with his pain: excercising the memories with Niska, the perpetual stalemate of survival in Serenity Valley, facing the pain, and the fear that letting it go would kill him (as it did with Niska), and his shame about allowing himself to die. I appreciate the complexity you bring the characters... with their true thoughts not always apparent from their actions. And the humor! Wash's line about following the crate-trail cracked me up.

I don't usually bother criticizing grammar and such, but I was enjoying the story so much that the errors did start to annoy me - they were getting in the way of a great fic! (The disruptive errors were pretty much just confusing uses of commas and the use of the incorrect (though properly spelled) words.) So, yeah, definately find a beta or two for the future, so that your beautifully insightful, clever work can really shine.

Thanks for sharing; I look forward to more from you!
