I want to know how it isn't just plain as day that Spike is hotter than Jayne...

I'd say 'cos Jayne looks about ready to cut the chocolate cake he made (he always cooks naked 
) and hand-feed it to me. While Spike strikes me as the type that pushes you away from the mirror in the morning while you're standing there brushing your teeth, since he has to do his sissy hair and pluck his eyebrows.
btw to check my theory I asked a couple of my gay friends which one they liked more; all drooled over Spike....

oh no no no no no. It is obvious that Spike is not only hotter but stronger than Jayne... Not just because he's a vampire, but the strength of character. There was one episode that stands out where Spike is being tortured for information and not only did he not break, but he stayed pithy! And there's so much more going on upstairs with Spike.
I love Firefly, but i will never understand the fascination with Jayne. Maybe i've just known too many big dumb guys. (bring on the flame!)

I think the deciding factor is simply this: are we comparing Spike of his hayday evil, don't mess with him unless you want to be retreived by your friends in little pieces or Spike the oh I have a soul AND I'm Buffy's bitch (can I say that here?) that makes me just sooooo special?
If the former, Jayne would put up a noble fight, but Spike would exit the most sexy.
If the latter, Jayne could use him for a tooth pick and still look highly attractive doing it.

it seems i must weigh in.
i will admit, i know nearly nothing of spike. i haven't been able to get a hold of any buffy or angel episodes yet, so i can only go on what i've gathered from the shadows.
first and foremost: it's like comparing apples and oranges. they could be compared if they were similar styles of male figures, but they seem to not be. they're both tough guys, but spike seems to take the sleezy "i'm so smooth" route, while jayne just doesn't know any other way. it's like comparing james bond to a steamy cowboy. they're just too different for anything but personal preference to make a strong arguement.
and on the queer front, as wela brings up, i'm gonna put my vote in for jayne, all the way! spike would appeal to the club bois, hands down. but we all know that they're wimps who just like to put on a show. and putting on a show won't win you any fights, even if you are tough!

Believe me, I don't understand my stance on this either. I am not the big thug type at all. If I was being true to form, I'd like Simon best of all the FF guys, or Mal. But truth be told, Jayne enters a scene and I all but fall off the couch. I tried to resist it, but I just can't. Even when I'm sitting there watching an episode and saying "A$$#*le!" over and over(yes, we all talk to the TV in my house ;-), I can't help but find him overwhelmingly hot.
This is not the first time he has done this to me, though, so maybe it's really more of an Adam Baldwin thing than a Jayne thing. I remember sitting in the theatre watching Full Metal Jacket thinking "God, I HATE this character.... so how can I think he's hot? I am morally bereft....but I can't help it!" ;-)
So I'll just go ahead and put the blame on him instead of thinking I'm developing some kind of odd fetish for big mean guys with big mean guns. (Yikes!)
