What gives with reality?
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 00:57:11

I really think I want to make this a "Dear diary" item. It's SO me! Let's talk about the Tams. (uh-oh, there he goes again!) Is River real? Or, to put it in another way, am I insane? No, I'm serious. Please, bear with me for a moment. Clinically speaking, a psychiatrist would probably define "insanity" in terms of no longer being able to distinguish fantasy from reality. Am I, by that definition, insane? No. Because I do not actually believe River Tam is a real-life character (I can't believe I just said that; *shudder* Curse my sudden, but inevitable betrayal!). And yet I say: "Full well she's real!" Wait a tick! What was that? Now, the point I'm driving at, is not that River provides for me a reality which is so strong and fulfilling that, to me, she could be said to be "real". Rather, I mean to say, she's better than real! And that, in point of fact, she's even supposed to be better than real! And that I'm very much aware of this; and that I'm very much supposed to be aware of this. :) River Tam is a mirror; but a very special one: the kind that shows you a better you! It's a favorite theme of mine. Looking into those beautiful wide eyes, I then see what I could be, and what I so very much want to become in the moment. As Nicholson expressed this so well to Helen Hunt, in As Good As It Gets, "You make me want to be a better person!" Spiritually speaking, is that not the greatest reality of all, the awareness of one's own potential, and ensuing drive towards betterment of the soul? Does not the clinical definition of reality fall so short of this? How barren it is, I say! When River says "I didn't think you'd come," I find myself elevated to levels of humanity that are, quite frankly, off the scale. At that one moment, for a moment, I become like my own soul, hundreds of years in the future, shiny to the Nth Degree, beaming with a Tenderness, Love and Care that -- if you want to talk reality -- are truly uncharacteristically human in the now. From such heights, looking down at Earth-That-Was, I say, what gives with reality? I'll take the blue pill! I want to see how deep the rabbit hole really goes! I want RealityPlus; I want the expanse we call the 'verse! FireFly, and River Tam in particular, of course, makes me want to be a better person. In that sense, I've relinquished my commitment to the reality of my current self. So, maybe I'm insane, after all. :)

Not exactly a newbie

Heya! I've been lurking around the site for about a month. Been converted for a bit longer than that. Figured I finally needed to get myself a login and stuff, so I can stop doing the anonymous message thing. That said, this is the most mature, fun, and talented fandom I ever did see. Maybe it's because I am relatively uninitiated into the world of true fandom, but most of the fanfiction I have read elsewhere has been... well... le suh. Usually, the fanart, while earnest, is similarly lacking in artistic talent. Here, the story is very, very different. So, um, hi!

another day another episode
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 13:23:10

Rather then watch all the episodes at once I decided to restrain myself and watch just one episode a day..that way by the time I get to the bdm it'll seem fresher...Y'know I envy someone who hasn't seen the series or the movie yet..you can never recapture the first time... Update on the comic it's coming along amazingly easier since switching to standard comic book format..The transition might be a little jarring at first but, what the hell, it's my story I'll do what I want, nyeh ,nyeh ):

Virus Recruiting

I know for a fact that my father's into Firefly and Serenity. But he never actually watches any of the DVDs we buy him. Although, he actually did watch Firefly when it was first out. That is something I will never actually be able to say, and I envy him for it. Hubby got into it once I borrowed Dad's copies. Our copy of Firefly is actually Hubby's, which Dad bought for him on his birthday last month. But Hubby's more of a passive person when it comes to fandom, and more enjoys sitting on the sidelines and ridiculing those who go overboard. I know exactly HOW much he likes Firefly because this is the first thing besides Farscape that he doesn't tease me about because of my fascination. Believe me, that is saying alot. Last night, I popped in the Train Job and Bushwhacked. My brother, who lives with us, lay down on the floor and watched both episodes without one peep. He hasn't commented wether he likes it or not, but since he watched two entire episodes, again it's saying something. My men can be so reserved! I'm slowly getting my Mom into the show. She's more of a Trekkie and into Red Dwarf and Dr. Who right now. But she'll come around. I'm trying to convince her to go see the Captain and Jayne at a somewhat-local convention come June. She seems pretty up for it (despite the pretty steep price), but I'm hoping she'll feel well enough after her treatments. They should be starting soon and I'm hoping she'll feel strong enough for a two hour drive and weekend-long Shindig come June. This coming Saturday we're going to the Bryn Mawr Theater to go see the BDM on the big screen. Not 'first-run', but it should definately be first-rate. I've convinced my sister's girlfriend's boyfriend (figure it out! LOL) to drive with me, then Mom should be meeting us there hopefully with Dad and Sis in tow. I'm very much looking forward to actually meeting other Browncoats face to face. Yesterday's Firefly Fix: The Train Job Bushwhacked Radio Flyer (Adam Baldwin)

My band, the Bedlam Bards, was recently named amongst the top ten renfaire bands of 2005, so we'll have one song played on the Renaissance Festival Podcast Special Awards Edition. I of course requested "Ballad of Joss" in hopes of spreading the Signal. Check it out:

Tax Refund Rampage, Part 3: The Arrival!
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 18:27:34

Just needed to gush about some of stuff finally starting to arrive :P Actually, a couple days earlier than I expected. Tricky thing about working nights, actually, is that what I usually do is stay up until about 2pm on days I work, and then for my days off, I try to get right to sleep so I can be up in the afternoon; get to hang out and stuff. Sometimes doesn't work so well, making my body shift sleep schedules that suddenly. Sleeping pills and caffeine help the transitions some(don't worry I know what I'm doing, and they're just for regulating my sleep, I try not to use them at all. :) Trouble with today was, I took the wrong gorram pills. Took the caffeine pills after work instead of the sleeping ones. So I'm trying to sleep, but too jittery to get it work. Good thing, though, cause the first package of my amazon.com blowout showed up a few days earlier than I'd been expecting. Looks like I'll have to go without sleep for today ;p This one had both the movie and tv show soundtracks, and Finding Serenity and the Visual Companion. The TPB should be showing up later on in the week, too, so I'm starting to get rather excited. Actually, I'm listening to the Firefly soundtrack, as I write this, which is why maybe I'm a little disjointed. I've played the second track five times already... (I LOVE that hook towards the end of that, the one that plays on the Train Job ep, after the bar fight when they're getting on Serenity...) First thing I've noticed: that Visual Companion is AMAZING-looking. I'm dumbfounded. Only had time to flip through a bit, but... shiny. That blew me away. And Finding Serenity: that I was really looking forward to. I've been in need of some Firefly-related stuff to read, and that's perfect bathroom reading. (The Companion's a little too pretty for that) Finding Serenity I wanted for the same reason I spend so much time reading through the forums here. (Tearing up now, the song from the funeral scene in the Message is playing :_( I think I just need more and more confirmation that I'm not the only person so totally captivated by this 'verse... :P Okay, I gotta close this off here and do some reading, try to work on some sketches some to keep me awake another 12 hours or so. Really, really, really loving this soundtrack as I write this, though. I've been seriously needing that, and I'm just now finding out how true it was. Man, if Greg Edmonson didn't get some sort of crazy award for this soundtrack, well, then someone is going to the special hell for overlooking him ;p Keep the faith, people. I've got my ammo, now. I'll be holding... hmmm... I guess I can stop typing.... ... now.
