I've been a subtle lurker on this sight for a year now. It feels good. I love that there are others out there devoted to being fans, to being geeks, to being supportive of something that is just downright cool. You can compare this to Star Wars. You can compare it to Star Trek. You can pull whatever you want out of your hat and start pointing out the similarities or the lackings or the faults. But the truth is this is just one really damn good show. And this movie doesn't have too much to live up to as far as the realm of 'higher art' may go. But when it comes to us, to people like you and me, this movie is a whole new reason to wake up in the morning. Somebody is finally being original, they're writing from their heart, and they're doing it RIGHT. So thanks, Joss. Thanks to everybody out there that helped bring this to life. Thanks to this site and the people that are so dedicated, so incredibly addicted, they make me look like a poser. You guys are awesome. Three days left, everybody. And I'm glad to have been here, with you, in the looming shadow of something that's really going to be great. Sharpshooter

I couldn't have timed it any better, really... Monday: arrival of "Serenity: The Official Visual Companion" and all three covers of Comic #3. Tuesday: my fiance gives me the "Finding Serenity" book for my birthday (which is, incidentally, in MAY). Today (Wednesday): arrival of my box of Serenity trading cards and the 3 box loader sets! Tomorrow (Thursday): Serenity opens nationwide!!! It's a non stop onslaught. I just have to find something for Friday. Hmmm. Maybe upload fanfic...

Well, here I am. And there is Serenity. Big. Vivid. Larger than life. All on the silver screen. I've managed to get myself on a list as "press", as an internet blogger, to see a prescreening of the final product. So with this review, I will make it official, as I reckon I do feel some responsibility on my part to "Do the job." Now being a fan, and a rabid one at that, it is sometimes hard to keep my geekboy fandom in check so I can maintain impartial judgement. I will try to do that here, and most likely I will fail, but all for good reason. (Hopefully I can avoid the spoilers!) Serenity is a damn fine movie. Is it the best ever made? No. But it certainly shoots for the moon and gets there. The movie will certainly prove to be a debate for many generations (especially if the sequels follow) as to how good of a sci-fi movie this really is. However, Serenity is more than just a sci-fi movie, and for that reason, it may be the best sci-fi movie never to be hailed as the best sci-fi movie ever. Serenity is a wonderful, well thought out, well played story about people. Everyday people. Like you and I, or not(since I suspect most of us aren't petty thieves), but people nonetheless who try to survive everyday into the next. The crew, like most of us, are living payday to payday, and do what we need to take care of ourselves and our own crew(families). Serenity shows us that we have to fight for the freedoms most take for granted, and some would look to take from us. Sure, you could say this is a political statement by Joss, but I think you need to look beyond that. Look into yourself. I think the movie begs the question of every viewer "Do you have what it takes to fight for what you believe in?". That in itself is a bold statement for any movie to make. I think this is what sets Serenity apart from all the other sci-fi out there today. Serenity invokes so many emotional reactions from its viewers as well. While I watched the movie, I also gleaned, both by sight and by sound, the reactions of other people, both fan and not, in the theatre. Every key emotion you could invoke in a film was there. Laughter, excitement, anger, sorrow, frustration, love, hatred, anxiety and even fear(yes, I heard people yelp!) are so artfully invoked by dynamic characters (played by great actors) set in a engaging story. Joss Whedon has an undeniable skill in getting you to those emotional highs and lows during the rollercoaster of action, and sometimes at points it would seem inappropriate (I mean, who laughs during a death scene? I'll be surprised if you don't chuckle too...and then cry. Trust me, it'll happen). Without this, the drama of the movie would slide on by, probably unnoticed. Simply said, if you like Science Fiction, this movie will please you. The action, the major story points, and the special effects (minus 1 or 2 mistakes I noticed that won't be obvious to most viewers, its just a curse I have) will make you dance for joy. However, if you are the type that wants more out of their movie, or you are bold enough to drag someone along who might not be the typical sci-fi fan, you will be treated to so much more. The drama is intense. The characters, played by the same actors that portrayed them in the series, are so nuanced, that they come alive and tell you so much about the world in which they exist with simple glances and short quips. They tell you how life in the 'Verse isn't fair. How things don't always go according to the plan. How the line between good and evil isn't so much a line as it is an ever-changing field of gray. And then there are the fans, like myself, who will not be disappointed (well, okay, a FEW of you might...but Joss is Joss and he will do what he does, so you are warned) by the near seamless transition for small screen series to big screen movie franchise (that's right, I expect there will be sequels...hell, some of those Star Trek movies were the worst ever, but they keep cranking them out don't they?). Joss makes a multitude of homages to

Could you send him my way? It's 1:53 am. I'm having another insomnia night. This is a pretty bad one, actually. I first woke up around 11 (thought I hadn't really been asleep). I sat up suddenly, thinking I'd forgotten to record the Inside Serenity thing that was on SciFi. I was a little annoyed at myself for that because the reason that I'd forgotten was that I'd been trying, unsuccessfully, to write a filk for that challenge over on the UB. It turns out I actually DID record it, and several eps of Firefly prior, so I'm good, but I was really annoyed at myself. I've got the memory of a goldfish. Anyway, but that was the thing that woke me up and prevented me from getting back to sleep. I had too many thoughts in my head, too many little things to think about and I can't share most of them with you because they were about the BDM and they are spoilery. I wonder if I'll remember them after the movie comes out, because right now they make perfect sense. And so I'm tossing and turning and my pillows are too high or too low or too lumpy or not lumpy enough and I'm hot and I'm cold and the blankets won't stay put and I just can't sleep and I'm miserable. Finally, around 1, I get up, decide to see what exactly it was that I did record and when I turn on the TV I find that Inside Serenity is just starting. Yay! So that was serendipitous (ha ha ha-it's 2am remember? This is very funny.) So I watch that, and then I rewind my tape to find that I did record it in the first place, so I have it for all posterity, though I know it'll probably end up on the DVDs or something. And then it occurs to me that I am VERY hungry. And thirsty. So I do something that I never do, which actually goes against all of my insomnia rules. Yes, I have rules. The first one being that I'm not allowed to get out of bed. But I do. I get up and eat a banana. What I really want right now is ice cream, but we don't have any. And now I've broken 2 more rules, which are that I never get up to eat at night, no matter how hungry I am and that I'm not allowed to get on the computer at 2am when I can't sleep. And here I am. It's pretty sad when you can't follow your own rules. What I hate most about insomnia is that it always takes an extra day to catch up to me. I'll be tired and grouchy tomorrow, that's given. But the lack of sleep won't really hit me until Thursday. Thursday is my big exciting day because after work I'm driving 4hrs to Raleigh for the North Carolina Big Damn Movie Premiere Party. And I don't want to be tired and grouchy there. My only hope is to somehow miraculously get 10hrs of sleep tomorrow night but of course that won't happen. I have to pack and there will be all sorts of last minute things and my cat will be freaking out because I'll be packing (he can be very needy for such an autonomous creature) and of course, there's LOST. Can't miss that! And will someone please remind me to take my guitar and amp out of the trunk of my car? I keep forgetting and now my guitar's all out of tune. (Memory like a goldfish!) Plus, the amp really weighs down the back end. Okay, I'm going to crawl back into bed now and try to get a couple of hours of sleep. Sorry you had to read my ramblings. I apologize for incoherentness and bad grammar. I'll be more pedantic when I'm more awake. 'night!

Like most of you, I've been making big and long-anticipated plans for Serenity's opening night. I planned to hire a sitter, gather a group of friends, and go with my husband and maybe our teenager and his friends (if they would humble themselves to be seen in public with old people). I envisioned an early showing, followed by a late dinner and drinks, giving our group ample time to discuss the movie's finer points. And did I mention the sitter? We VERY rarely do this -- it's really a special and expensive treat for everyone. First, the stepson bows out. That's fine, I figured he'd want to go separately with his buds, and anyway he has to be up early for a school trip on Saturday. Next, the one IRL local friend I know who is also a serious Whedon fan doesn't even reply to my e-mailed invitation. What's up with that? Then, my husband ditches. He moonlights as a lacrosse referee (which, mind you, is a SPRING SPORT), and a gig he had lined up for Saturday morning was suddenly rescheduled for Friday evening. Also, mind you, good wife that I am, I had booked our Serenity date into his Outlook calendar myself, weeks ago. Hmph. Sniff, even. Now, my sitter has cancelled. Very busy week at work, and she can't get off on Friday before 9 p.m. I'm feeling downright sorry for myself this morning.

In honour of my last day on the current contract I have sent out the following bulk e-mail to the department... You can’t just shove pointy needles in my eyes and ask me what I see! Also, Hamsters is nice. I mean, what do they expect? I go out for a cig, and when I come back theres a 75cl bottle of Belgian 6.6% Beer on my desk... I mean, me, with beer, with my reputation? What do they think I'm going to do with it, read it a bed time story...

Well, Cowgirl and I showed up to the prescreening. I had gotten a screen as the result of registering that seemed to indicate that I should show up to the theater. Given that the text of the email that people did receive indicated that you still might not get into the theater, I'm just as glad I didn't get the email. We were on the last and were admitted before everyone else. Since we were amoung the first to get into the theater we got T-Shirts. Now I have a confession to make. I picked up a shirt and Cowgirl picked up a shirt. When we got to our seats, I found another shirt wrapped in the one I had picked up. I started to go back to the front of the theater; but, realized that there had only been a few shirts available. I had this vision of me standing in the middle of 400 fans with one coveted T shirt. My Son has a Serenity T shirt now. The movie? WOW

I started Tuesday by going to work and securing plans with friends for the BDM. I ended the day, watching a sneak preview of the movie. I didn't expect that. Someone in the office somehow got a sneak preview ticket, and since they couldn't go, they gave them to me. So.. my first spoiler free review of the BDM and all i can say is gorram good! A friend and I sat there speechless for half the credits. It was... amazing. Definetly going to watch it again, and then again.... and maybe more. That's a much as I can say without spoilers.

I know this is going to sound crazy but I have only seen the entire series of Firefly yesterday and I have to say that I was completely blown away. I love this show. It's a terrible shame that it had to be cancelled. We should petition to bring it back on the air, or at least try.
