There's a line in a song by the Austin Lounge Lizards that goes: "Sometimes I wake up to find I've yodeled in my sleep!" I feel like that. So I was driving home from Austin last night, and this idea I had a week or two ago just started exploding in my head. It's a Class II Filk (meaning original tune and lyrics, but based on someone else's scifi). It's about Out of Gas. And it ain't funny. People mostly expect filk to be funny, but this ain't. If I did it right, it's gripping. And now I have to learn to play with a slide, because it's begging for a slide. I don't have a slide, so I started picking up random items from around the house to try. I commented to my wife that the most successful improvised slide seemed to be a double A battery. She asked if it was wise to rub a battery on my strings. I replied, "Nah, it's probably quang sh'duh." (My attempt at the Chinese-like sounds Wash made to describe the Reavers flying without core containment.) She said, "Are you speakin' Chinese at me, darlin'?" I denied that I was, and then I went for the sympaty plea. "Honey, I filked again." "Well, Babe," she said, "you'll have to clean it up." *sigh* I guess I'll have no choice but to record it, put it in an MP3 postcard, and send it around the 'net. Gosa!

Short and sweet today I am moving house and looking for a new flat. I have just been to a house where the toilet is in the kitchen and the fridge is in the living room. I ask you, what planet do some people live on?

Gorrammit, we did it! We're back in space! Hot damn! I can't begin to tell you how excited I am for this! And I had to listen to it on the radio as I drove to work, but Amber called me and said it looked awesome. They even have cameras mounted to the shuttle now. Reminds me of "Serenity" when they're blasting away from the Reaver ship! :D But this is so much bigger than any of us realise. I remember (I think it was) an Allstate insurance commercial from years back where Commander Sisko was asking where were our flying cars!? See, everyone looked at the 21st century as this potential new golden age where science fiction would become reality and we'd have moonbases and trips to Mars and interstellar exploration. So what do we have? We have a world that is scared and looking inward and very paranoid. If the Shuttle program had failed, been shutdown and mothballed, then I seriously feel like that would have been the end for our hopes of ever reaching off-world. The whole 'verse as we love watching would never have a chance of becoming reality! We need to keep reaching out, reaching beyond our Earthly limits, we need to strike out for the black and leave atmo' behind (tho, not forever)! Thank you NASA and thank you to the crew of Discovery for returning us to flight. You're our brightest hope for the future.
