there's always warmth onboard Serenity. After watching [i]War Stories[/i], I was struck (again) at the 'companionship' that can be found between the Captain and his motley crew. Aside from the whole big Saving-Mal-from-Niska thing...I was reminded how each crew memeber really does care for each other..... Book's reassuring Simon that he's STILL not shot anyone, Capt's reaching out and holding Kaylee's hand as he walks past her as she sits on the stairs, Jayne loading Vera and looking down at the rest of the crew.. ."What?". Does the love ever stop ? Hee hee.

Ok, so I watched Firefly when it first came on and fell in love with it. So I was cruising the store the other day, and what do I see? The DVD set. So I had known is was on DVD, but hadn't purchased it. Yikes! I have been missing this. Oh if only I were some sort of actress and was cool enough to be on this show. So yeah. It's a love story on this end. Pretty exciting about the movie and people getting to meet the cast and all. Come on out to Oahu guys...I'll show you a good time!

We are in Kentucky...doing the road trip thing with the in-laws. Ewok is sitting next to me at another library computer checking out all the new images of firefly/serenity art...we miss home, Coffeewench (Gingi) and the animals...mostly miss coming online to visit with FF friends and family! After promising my sister for the last month that I would send her my copies of the Firefly series, I've decided that I just can't part with it. I'll just buy her one of her own for Christmas. I will send her last years Halloween costume though. She'll make a lovely Juliet. After all, she is Juliet. I want to go as a reaver. Reavers are scary mfers. I'm not quite sure how I would mutilate my flesh without actually hurting myself. I know they have fake skin out there, I just don't know how to use it. Then there's the fact that I've never actually seen a full-blown reaver. Yeah, there's the guy in the Bushwacked episode, but I think he was just getting started on the scary. There was a lot more scary to be had. Ah, screw it, I'll just go as Juliet. I made a lovely Juliet.

(in no particular order) [B]Mal Reynolds.[/B] [I]Firefly[/I] begins and ends, for me, with Captain Tightpants. I love his richness as a character, his contradictions, his pain, his humour, his connections to his crew. The 'Serenity' teaser slays me every time -- his broken stare. His doubts and tenacity in spite of them. "You can't take the sky from me," indeed. I tend to, on average, get about five minutes into an episode before declaring to my mother with a grin that ‘I love my Captain!’ There is so much about him that I could say that I’m certain has already been said. I'm just going to note him here and possibly write a 'reasons why I love Mal' post soon, instead. [B]The philosophies.[/B] The existentialism, the independence, the civil disobedience. Shades of grey, allusions to piracy and Robin Hood. Elements of Buddhism as I understand it; the Noble Truths. "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do." A line from [I]Angel[/I], and it resonates all through [I]Firefly[/I]. The search for meaning, belonging and identity. [I]Yes.[/I] [B]Inara Serra.[/B] Another character whom I could write pages upon pages about. Inara, like Tara on [I]Buffy[/I], is a character who focuses upon other people with tenderness and compassion, and lets that define her. The Madonna and the whore all in one -- horae, the sacred prostitute -- she is Mal's foil, parallel and opposite in a way that colours all their interactions with such meaning that I can't help but root for them every single time. I’m sure I’ll write more on Inara soon, too… [B]The writing.[/B] Kind of a no-brainer for a Joss Whedon show, but the quality of the writing never fails to awe me. The poetry, the humour, the resonance. Joss always seems to invert that which you're expecting and, ultimately, leave things in a way that is so much more satisfying. I don't know if I even [I]could[/I] narrow a list of my favourite quotations down. [B]River Tam.[/B] Her story stands incomplete, like the show's. Neither River nor [I]Firefly[/I] were done becoming what they could become. She suffered, had her eyes opened and was learning to cope with what she saw, to transcend it. Her way of looking at the world had been altered, and she offered an alternative way for the audience to see things for a while, too. [B]The cinematography & the whole 'look' of the show.[/B] Lens flares, unusual lighting, the imagery. The fused cultures. Surprising visuals, like Inara giving Book benediction. Little details, like Kaylee's strawberries, Badger's apple peeler. The way things are shot -- the way the camera stops in the sponge bath scene, for example. River!vision in 'Objects in Space'. [B]Simon Tam.[/B] Simon as Intellect, Simon as Selfless Love; both of these can be argued and supported by the series. The Buffy & Dawn protect-your-sister arc rewritten with higher stakes, deeper resonance and more truth. However, Simon was also a snarky bitch and eye candy. Wheels within wheels -- classic Whedon. [B]The humour.[/B] Wash and the dinosaurs. Mal's cruel joke upon Simon in 'Serenity.' 'Jaynestown.' So many little moments in episodes that can otherwise make you think, or break your heart. Joss and company are absolute masters at using humour to underscore what they're saying while giving you a reprieve from it. [B]The entire crew of 'Serenity'.[/B] I've highlighted four characters here, but truly I love them all. It's an ensemble show, and, possibly for the first time, I love every regular. I love how they interact, how human they all are, and how they each show up each other's humanity. I love Mal & Zoe's absolute trust. I adore the complicated but loving marriage between Wash and Zoe. I love her quiet strength and his manic energy. I love Jayne, the unrepentant asshole. I love how he interacts with the Tams. I love Kaylee's crush on Simon -- even though I don't think the two of them would get far together. I love Book and the mystery of him, I love how he interacts (especially)

God Bless Google! :biggrin: If I knew how to do the icon with the beer glasses I would insert it and raise a glass to the search engine. Mentioned in my last blog I was about ready to kill my computer or, as someone suggested, throw it out a window. Microsoft Word wasn't working even after I sent out for repairs. I know Word doesn't seem like a big huge thing to be without, but when you have essays out the [i]pee goo[/i] to write you tend to rely on the stupid application. I should have turned to Google sooner. I typed in "Microsoft Word troubleshooting" and got this amazing site that suggested a couple of methods I could try. And one worked! Word isn't exactly fixed, I still can't open it through the start menu or the icon, but hey, I got it to run. That deserves a happy little dance from me. But here's the best part: I got my [i]Firefly[/i] fic back! :biggrin: While in the process of trying to fix Word I found a bunch of back-up files. After clicking on a couple I found copies of my fic. They don't match up with what I had saved before my computer lost its sanity, but one was close enough and I was planning on rewriting the latest part anyway. Now I can resume my attempt at a half decent [i]Firefly[/i] fic. :wink:
