Thanks for the comments, especially the cautionary note concerning Simon, River and psychic-ness. In my story Simon's psychic abilities are meant to be too limited to be very useful without resorting to dangerous drug treatments, but I also wanted it to surface from time to time on its own.

To clarify, while River is awesome super-psychic but unstable telepathic, Simon is meant to be naturally empathic, which is why during a few stressful moments I've had his mind subconsciously "borrow" ideas or techniques from crewmembers. But I want Simon to remain distinctively Simon and I certainly don't want him to replace River. I'll have to be careful to make this clear as I continue writing.
