I need a lesson in etique

(and possibly spelling)Some of my favorite fanFics are here in the blue sun room but quite a few of my favorites have stopped being produced. Im sure for many reasons from lack of muse time some combination of the two or some other unknown factor.
The question is: Can i continue a story for some one that is no longer writing as long as i give credit were credit is due or what exactly is the S.O.P. for this sorta thing.
oh and Im looking for some beta readers and i need to know how i can go about that.
