Shaun of the Dead

And just a few days ago, I was ranting to a friend of mine how no good movies have opened since July. What a sad state we're in.

With few exceptions, "Shaun of the Dead" is everything we wanted "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" to be, but wasn't. "Shaun of the Dead" had a recognizable plot, characters we cared about, good-looking cinematography, acting, zombies, a soundtrack, and oh yeah, humor.

One of the quotes on FFN.net (or was it on a DVD commentary track?) is about how Joss isn't interested in Indiana Jones being a super-human super-hero (I'm paraphrasing), but about the real people and just how much crap they'll take... and how they react when they've been pushed too far. Yeah, DVD commentary track... it was the scene where we first meet Badger, he's essentially stepping on Mal for statement after statement, until Badger takes a verbal swing at his crew. Then it's like, whoa there, cowboy, bring it on back to the stable.

And so, we come back to the first thumbs up I can give in weeks, "Shaun of the Dead." Shaun is a WAAAY bigger loser than anyone we meet in "Firefly," but reacts admirably to what can only be described as a Time of Crisis. I couldn't stop thinking about Joss's comment, which I must now go back and listen to.

If you're a fan of zombie movies, or if you just hate them, then we have a winner. If you just think violence is not your cup of tea on any day of the week, then a) What are you doing watching Firefly, and b) 'Wimbledon' didn't suck.

Oh, and it's very British. That helps.
