Trying to figure this all out

I'm a recent fan, thanks to hulu.com. I've been a Joss Whedon fan for a long time, and I thought I would check out Firefly. I was immediately hooked by this family of characters.

What I can't seem to understand, though, is why it has so much resonance? Looking for family? A plot without closure? Hope that we can all get by and find a little happiness?

I'm quite spun by it all.
