The pull of writing a Firefly fanfic

Friday, September 10, 2004 1:50 AM

I'm a fanfic writer. I'll admit to that. I wrote my first Buffy fic back in the third season and a friend of mine actually said it was good. Now that caught me by surprise. First off, I hadn't told her where the find the story, but secondly, I hadn't really considered the story to be all that good. I still don't when I find myself visiting the website where it's posted. I just like to write. Most times I think my stuff is crap and I don't end up finishing it but sometimes, by some freak miracle, I do complete something that doesn't make me cringe and I find the guts to post it.

Right now I'm writing a Firefly fic, for no apparent reason, and I can't stop. It's weird, having this constant flow of ideas. Usually with a Buffy or Angel fic of mine, I have this initial burst of inspiration but it quickly wears off and I end up with a section of story that's going nowhere. I'm entering about the middle of the Firefly fic and I don't hate it. I know, I'm shocked my own self.

Okay, so I'm worried about characterization and whether I'm using too many Chinese phrases in one part of the story, but I haven't had any thoughts about giving up. That's inspiration for ya. Maybe when I'm done writing, I'll post it here.

Of course, that’s after a beta reader has seen it. Anyone?
