Whoa, whoa, wait a minute, let me explain!

Okay, so no doubt some of you have probably read my latest one-shot, Disoriented, which has hints of slashiness between Simon and Mal.And no doubt, some of you are sitting in front of your screens, scratching your heads and wondering where exactly your faithful Kaylee/Simon-Mal/Inara-shipping TamSibling has gone.
Never fear, I am still around! However, I felt that maybe I needed to explain myself - just a wee bit.
I've been reading a lot of fanfic, and have become quite enamored with the idea of Mal/Simon. And no, it is not because of the guy-on-guy action - in truth, that does nothing for me.
Rather, it's because of this:
Simon, as a character, can be vulnerable, and personally I think he's at his cutest when he is. However, when Simon is in a relationship with Kaylee he is, quite literally, the man. This prevents him from showing weakness of any kind, even when his crazy, schizophrenic sister is running around killing rooms full of Reavers.
With Mal, on the other hand, Simon has the "permission," if you will, to show his emotions and vulnerability and know that Mal will understand. The Captain after all survived Serenity Valley which was a horror in and of itself. Plus, Simon knows that Mal will not think any less of him and will be strong enough to handle it. I just don't think this is the case with Kaylee. Which is not to imply Kaylee is weak - however, if Simon were to really lose it, I don't know how Kaylee would deal. I have a feeling she'd be so worried for him that it would almost make it worse for Simon.
Needless to say, this dichotomy fascinates me. Also, just for your own edification, Disoriented originally had a Simon/Kaylee ending, however, after reading it Kaynara said I should turn it into Mal/Simon and I had to admit, begrudgingly, that while I was writing it, the thought did spring to mind.
I do not anticipate writing any other Mal/Simon - EVER. Do I think that the characters of Mal and Simon are gay? No. Is this AU? Yes.
If you are a regular reader of my stuff, I hope Disoriented hasn't turned you off completely. If the idea bothers you, I'm begging you not to read it. I have hundreds of pages of banked stories on my hard drive full of S/K and M/I goodness, so there is more to come.
If you did like this little fic departure of mine, then great. I certainly hope you left me a comment to let me know!
Thanks for listening to me ramble. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming ...
