March on Marshall Riley's Army

Wednesday, December 13, 2006 6:47 PM

Hi there,

Today's song is Marshall Riley's Army by Geordie folk band Lindisfarne (why name it after marshall riley? why not after scullion or symonds or the other one i can't remember the name of?) in honour of my class trip to Jarrow. My friend gets to go to Barcelona for a field trip but I get to go to a place which isn't far from where I go to uni.

Jarrow is famous for two things
1. The Venerable Bede, C8th monk/scholar/historian
2. the march of 1936 to London for jobs.

Now, as a day it wasn't bad, Jarrow is a bit of a craphole but they seem to be very proud of their heritage. There are two statues dedicated to the march, two flat blocks named after Ellen Wilkinson and a pub called the Jarrow Crusader. The lecturer, Matt was very nice and bought us drinks in the pub.

I was quite insulted this evening. Whilst we were in the pub my brother was going on about how he is always being called a goth and when i was in the chinese these stupid charva lasses accused me of being a goth!!! Just because I was wearing a black hoodie that automatically makes me a goth. Then to add insult to injury they accused me of being a punk.
