My Grandmother's on the way out.

It's no real surprise, actually. She suffered a stroke several years ago and has been in a fairly steady decline since. . .starting with her mental health, and finally, her body.

What kills me the most about 'stroke dementia' is that most folks who suffer it KNOW that they're not firing on all cylinders anymore. In fact, one day, during a flash of sharp lucidity, my Grandmother was her old self again. . .and actually laughed and said, "I still remember everything. . .I just get it in the wrong order. I see that I'm getting it wrong, but I can't sort it out."

It killed me to hear that. A strong, Irish grandmother now dependent upon the staff of a nursing home to live day to day.

I got a call from Mom last night telling me that "Mema" was on the way out. . .her body was simply winding down. She wasn't expected to make it through the night. She did, of course. . .she's got that Irish thing of hanging on, just because you can't CONVINCE us that we're actually DONE with our work.

So now. . .I get to agonize about it for an undeterminable length of time until the end finally comes.

Suck.
