The Redneck Resurgence

Wow, nearly 2.5 weeks since my last blog? I love the end of the school year. But here it is. Last day. Kids are gone and I'm just cleanin' up the room.

But I have noticed something. Something a bit strange, IMHO. Perhaps it's a side-effect of working in a small town with a Wal-Mart (despite it still being part of Silicon Gulch). But I was over at said Wal-Mart a couple days ago and saw Father's Day shirts that read "Redneck Dad". And I thought...what the heck? Is being a redneck becoming fashionable? I mean, they were right next to the King of the Hill -themed shirts!

And have you noticed how everything now is becoming connected to NASCAR? KFC is doing lots of NASCAR promos! I think Pizza Hut just started one (maybe it's Dominos). Hell, even Herbie's new movie has him in NASCAR! Yeah, like a VW bug from the 60s would pass NASCAR inspections...and besides, VWs are a trillion times cooler than NASCAR!

And please, most NASCAR races are just one giant left-hand turn. Where's the skill in that? Give me Formula One or Rallye racing anyday!

Even the school I teach in sees redneck references amogst the kids. There's a large asian population here and the few white kids seriously come across very redneck...it's like they're embracing it or something! *sigh*
