Watching My Job Balance on the Edge of a Knife

People always look at teachers and think "Oh, they've got it so good. Three months off in the summer, their days are usually over by 3pm, etc, etc." What most people don't see is the incredible stress that most of go through at this time of year. For some reason, Californians have stopped giving a crap about education. Budgets have been getting smaller and smaller for years. I've been lucky enough to get into a district that saw this coming and started saving early. But now we got down to a point where we needed to pass a parcel tax in order to keep things at the status quo. It wasn't big; just an extra $140 per year for the next five years.
It didn't pass. Almost...60% of the vote when we needed 67%, but the fact is we're not getting the money and the district is now looking at cutting 58 teachers districtwide. By all my estimations, I just might miss the cut...but so barely will it be that I will now be the bottom of the totem pole. But hey, if I make it to next year, I'll at least be tenured.
All I care about now is making it to next year. For more of a rant, see my other blog at http://norcalriviera.blogspot.com
